Saffell spent most of his career in the American Association and Pacific Coast League,
but was an extra outfielder and pinch hitter in four seasons with Pittsburgh. While
managing Reno (California League) in 1964, he was suspended for 30 days and fined
$250 when he refused to field his team as a protest against poor umpiring.
