A fancy-fielding, all-around infielder, Ryan was a regular at second base for about half his 12-year career. Remembered as a good team player, he became a coach, briefly taking over as manager of both the Braves and Rangers. (EW)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 14, 1944: Connie Ryan singles with two outs in the 8th inning, as Reds P Bucky Walters fires a one-hitter against the Braves to win, 4–0. This is one of a record-tying seven shutouts recorded today out of 16 games, a since-topped mark.

» September 29, 1949: In the 5th inning against the Dodgers, the Braves Connie Ryan protests against playing in the rain by kneeling on the on-deck circle with his raincoat on. Umpire George Barr ejects Ryan from the game.

» May 10, 1950: The Reds trade veteran C Walker Cooper to the Braves for 2B Connie Ryan.

» July 7, 1950: The Reds' Connie Ryan steals home in the 11th to give Cincinnati a 5–4 win over Chicago.

» May 6, 1951: The Reds a Giants split a pair at the Polo Grounds, with the Reds taking the opener, 4–3, in 10 innings. Reds 2B Connie Ryan nabs Whitey Lockman in the 10th with the hidden ball trick, the 2nd time in two years that he's pulled it off against New York. The Giants take the nitecap, 8–5, behind Dave Koslo.

» May 15, 1951: At Crosley Field, Braves P Vern Bickford pitches a 2-hitter, but Ewell Blackwell bests him by allowing one hit, as the Reds win, 1–0. Connie Ryan's 6th inning hit is the 1st off Bickford, and Johnny Pramesa's homer in the 7th is the other. The only Boston hit is a 5th inning double by Bob Elliott. The Reds tie the National League record (set in 1911) for nine innings by going to bat just 24 times.

» May 23, 1951: The Reds Connie Ryan clouts an 11th inning grand slam to beat the Cardinals, 5–1, in St. Louis.

» December 10, 1951: The Cards trade lefty Max Lanier and OF Chuck Diering to the Giants for 2B Eddie Stanky, who becomes the team's player-manager. The Reds trade C Smoky Burgess, 2B Connie Ryan and P Howie Fox to the Phillies for C Andy Seminick, infielder Eddie Pellegrini, OF Dick Sisler and P Niles Jordan. The Reds will regret letting the burly catcher go and will reacquire him, again exchanging Seminick, in three years.

» April 16, 1953: Connie Ryan has 6 consecutive hits, but the Phils lose 14-12 to Pittsburgh. The Phillies score 9 runs in the top of the 5th, and the Pirates come back with 6 in the bottom to tie the NL record for runs in an inning.

» December 10, 1953: The Reds trade OF Willard Marshall to the White Sox for infielders Rocky Krsnich, Connie Ryan and P Saul Rogovin. The Sox also pick up Cass Michaels from the A's.

» August 9, 1960: With fine relief pitching of Lindy McDaniel in the opener and a 5-hitter by Curt Simmons in the nitecap, the Cards sweep the Phils, 5–4 and 6–0. Phillie Tony Taylor ties a major-league record for 2B by going the entire doubleheader (18 innings) without a putout, the first to achieve the feat since Connie Ryan of the Phillies, June 14, 1953.

» August 30, 1975: The Braves fire Clyde King, naming Connie Ryan as interim manager.

» June 28, 1977: Billy Hunter becomes the Rangers' 4th manager in six days. Connie Ryan had filled in after Eddie Stanky's departure.
