As a rookie sensation with the White Sox in 1913, Russell was 22-16 (1.91). Although he never matched those figures, he was 18-11 in 1916 and led the AL in winning percentage (.750) with a 15-5 mark for the World Champion Sox of 1917. Released with a dead arm early in 1919, he returned to the ML as an outfielder with Pittsburgh in 1922, hitting .368 with 12 home runs and 75 RBI in only 60 games. (RL)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 22, 1916: Brownie 1B George Sisler makes his final mound appearance of the year, a complete game 2–0 loss to White Sox starter Reb Russell.

» July 10, 1916: For the 2nd time this season, White Sox pitchers toss shutouts in a doubleheader, this time against the Red Sox. Lefty Williams wins 4–0, then Reb Russell follows with a 3–0 victory. With the temperature at Fenway in the 90s, this is the first of three consecutive doubleheaders for the two Sox.

» May 24, 1917: Reb Russell goes 12 innings for the White Sox, giving up 11 hits, as he shuts out Washington, 1–0.

» October 13, 1917: Game Five sees White Sox southpaw Reb Russell relieved by Ed Cicotte. Russell gave up two hits and a walk to the first three batters he faced. In a sloppy game marred by three New York and six Chicago errors, the White Sox break a 5–5 tie with three runs in the 8th. Red Faber, working the last two innings, is the winning pitcher.

» August 8, 1922: Pittsburgh makes a major-league record 46 hits in a doubleheader against Philadelphia. Pittsburgh sweeps, winning 19-8 and 7-3. With their 27 hits in game one, and 22 the day before, a two-game major-league record (49) is set. In today's double pounding, the hitting stars are Reb Russell and Cotton Tierney, each of whom collect eight hits.

» September 25, 1964: Dean Chance beats the Twins' Jim Kaat 1–0 to become the Angels first 20-game winner. Chance's five 1–0 wins in 1964 ties the major-league record held by four pitchers (Reb Russell; W. Johnson; Bush; Hubbell).

» September 17, 1981: Fernando Valenzuela sets the National League rookie record with his 8th shutout of the season, a 2–0 three-hitter versus the Braves. He ties the ML mark of Russ Ford (1910) and Reb Russell (1913).
