Books and articles about Chico Ruiz

One of the few utilitymen to appear on the cover of a national magazine, Ruiz had his career cut short when he was killed in an automobile crash at the age of 33. This "Cuban swifty" pulled a gun on Alex Johnson in the California Angels' clubhouse in 1971. (KC)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 21, 1964: John Tsitouris hurls a 1–0 shutout for the Reds over Art Mahaffey and the first-place Phillies, launching a 10-game Phils' losing streak. Rookie Chico Ruiz scores the only run when, with Frank Robinson at bat, he steals home with two out in the 6th inning.

» August 28, 1967: In the Reds 3–2 loss to the Phils, catcher Johnny Bench makes his debut. He goes 0-for-3 before Chico Ruiz pinch hits for him in the 9th with a runner on 2B.

» June 29, 1969: The Reds score three runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie the Giants at six apiece, then win in the 10th, 7–6, when Chico Ruiz hits a bases loaded single.

» November 25, 1969: The Reds trade Alex Johnson and Chico Ruiz to the California Angels for pitchers Pedro Borbon, Jim McGlothlin and Vern Geishert. The talented but troubled Johnson, who hit over .300 in his two seasons with the Reds, will win the AL batting title in 1970. Borbon and McGlothlin will be valuable additions to the big Red Machine.

» June 13, 1971: Chico Ruiz allegedly pulls a gun on Angels teammate Alex Johnson in a clubhouse incident. There are no witnesses to the episode, which Ruiz denies, and it is one of a series of problems involving Johnson in 1971. Both players are hitless pinch hitters in the 5–2 loss to Washington.

» February 9, 1972: Angels IF Chico Ruiz, age 33, is killed in an auto crash in San Diego.
