After leading the Southern Association with a 1.57 ERA at Montgomery in 1976, Rozema was TSN AL Rookie Pitcher of the Year with the Tigers in 1977, going 15-7 with a 3.10 ERA. The 15 wins would be a career high for the slender finesse pitcher, as he found himself working mostly in long relief by 1980. Rozema missed most of 1982 after tearing cartilage and ligaments in his left knee in a fight with the Twins ' John Castino, and he didn't pitch in the 1984 postseason for the Tigers. (SCL)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» April 21, 1977: Detroit's Dave Rozema shuts down Boston 8–0 for his first ML win.

» April 13, 1978: The Tigers take two from Texas, winning 6–2 behind Dave Rozema, and 3–2 behind the pitching of Mark Fidrych. The Bird gives up a 2-run homer in the first, but zeroes after that.

» September 20, 1978: The Red Sox collect six hits -- 4 by Jerry Remy -- off Dave Rozema but the Tigers clobber Boston, 12–2. Lou Whitaker and Rusty Staub both have 3-run homers to lead Detroit's 15-hit attack. The Sox loss, combined with the Yankees split with Toronto, leaves New York two games in front with 10 games to go.

» September 26, 1978: In a duel of aces, Dennis Eckersley tops Dave Rozema, scattering seven Tiger hits to win, 4–1. Eck's record at Fenway is now 10–1. The Sox have 14 hits, led by Jim Rice's 44th homer of the year. The Yankees top the Blue Jays, 4–1, to keep a one-game lead over Boston.

» May 14, 1982: Kent Hrbek of the Twins goes 0-for-5 in an 11-inning 4–2 loss to the Tigers, ending his hitting streak at 23. The game is marred by a bench-clearing brawl in which Tigers P Dave Rozema tears knee ligaments, sidelining him for the rest of the season. Rozema is 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA.

» April 21, 1984: At home before 34,395 fans, the Tigers beat the White Sox 4–1, ending LaMarr Hoyt's personal 15-game winning streak. Dave Rozema pitches six shut out innings for the win, while Lou Whitaker has a homer and three runs scored.

» April 8, 1985: At the opener in Baltimore, Texas starter Charlie Hough is lifted in the 6th despite giving up no hits. Hough walked 4 in a row -- 8 altogether -- and C Don Slaught had allowed another run to score on a passed ball. Hough's replacement Dave Rozema only allows 2 hits. Unfortunately, one of the hits is a 2-run HR in the 8th by Eddie Murray to snap a 2–2 tie. Don Aase is the winner.
