FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY

» July 28, 1994: Texas P Kenny Rogers hurls a perfect game, defeating the Angels, 4-0. Rogers fans eight in the 11th regular season perfect game in major league history. He becomes the 1st left-hander in American League history to toss a perfecto and the 14th P in history.

» April 26, 1995: Despite just 6,300 fans at the Yanks pre-opening workout, 50,245 show up for the opener, the smallest opening crowd at the Stadium since 1990. The Yankees start with a win, 8–6, over the Rangers, as Jimmy Key goes five innings to pick up the win. It is his 3rd straight opener and his Opening Day record is 6–0. Kenny Rogers is the loser, giving up four runs in three innings, including a homer to Danny Tartabull. Bernie Williams also homers.

» June 1, 1995: The Rangers defeat the Twins, 6-3, behind Kenny Rogers. Minnesota scores its 1st run in the 7th inning, ending Rogers' scoreless-inning streak at 39. The victory brings Texas to within one 1/2 games of California for the American League West lead.

» December 30, 1995: The Yankees sign free agent P Kenny Rogers to a 4-year contract.

» April 21, 1996: New York's expensive free-agent, Kenny Rogers, finally debuts, throwing a no-hitter for five 1/3 innings. He leaves with a 4–0 lead, and New York holds on for a 9–5 win over the Twins.

» May 28, 1996: At Anaheim, Kenny Rogers loses his no-hitter in the 8th when Garret Anderson hits a lead off single, and loses the game in the 9th when he walks Chili Davis with the bases loaded to score an unearned run. Jason Grimsley is the winner, 1–0, dropping New York into a tie for first place with Baltimore.

» June 2, 1996: At Oakland, the Yankees win 11–4 and do it the old—fashioned way—by stealing eight bases. Gerald Williams, with 10 career steals, has four steals to tie a club record, and rookie Derek Jeter adds 2. Kenny Rogers (4–1) is the benefactor, pitching six 1/3 innings for the win, as the Yankees stay one 1/2 games ahead of the O's.

» June 18, 1996: The Yanks manage just three hits off Brad Radke, but one is a 2-run home run by Tino Martinez, as the Yanks beat Minnesota, 2–0. Radke had retired the first 20 batters. Kenny Rogers pitches eight shutout innings for the win.

» September 2, 1996: In his first game back in action since undergoing surgery for an aneurysm in his pitching shoulder in May, Yankees' P David Cone hurls seven hitless innings in New York's 5-0 victory over the Athletics. Mariano Rivera gives up one hit in two innings as he finishes up for Cone. Cone's remarkable return sends Kenny Rogers to the bullpen.

» May 8, 1997: 9th Against the Royals in the 6th inning, the Yankees catch Jay Bell in a rundown when Bell is suddenly called out by umpire Dale Ford, who thinks he passed the preceding baserunner, Jose Offerman. Offerman, however, had been forced out at 3B. Royals' manager Bob Boone argues until the umps agree and put runners back at 2B and 3B and call for a resumption of play. Chili Davis then lines a 2-run single off Kenny Rogers to tie the score. The Royals win 7–5 in 12 innings, with the victory going to Randy Veres. The Yanks protest that the rundown play should not have been reversed. Gene Budig will dismiss the protest, stating that with the rundown there were several scenarios where Bell could have escaped a tag.

» November 7, 1997: The Yankees trade P Kenny Rogers to the Athletics in exchange for a player to be named.

» November 18, 1997: The Yankees obtain 3B Scott Brosius from the Athletics to complete the Kenny Rogers deal.

» August 15, 1999: The Mets defeat the Giants, 12-5, behind Kenny Rogers' complete game victory. It is the 1st complete game of the year for the Mets, who had gone 139 consecutive games without a complete game. They fall one short of the major-league record of 140 set by the Angels earlier this season.

» October 13, 1999: Atlanta takes a 2-game lead over NY in the NLCS with a 4-3 victory. The Braves score all four of their runs in the 6th inning on a pair of home runs by Brian Jordan and Eddie Perez off Mets starter Kenny Rogers. » October 19, 1999: The Braves defeat the Mets, 10-9 in 11 innings, to take the NLCS, 4-games-to-2. Atlanta blew leads of 5-0 and 7-3, as NY eventually tied the score on a home run by Mike Piazza. A bases loaded walk by Kenny Rogers with one out in the last half of the 11th brings home the winning run. Braves C Eddie Perez is voted MVP of the LCS.

» April 2, 2000: Texas Ranger starter Kenny Rogers ties Frank Viola for third place in consecutive home wins when he defeats the Chicago White Sox in Arlington. Rogers has won 19 consecutive home games and hasn't lost on his own turf since June 28, 1997, a span of 1,012 days (through April 4). Ray Kremer of the Pittsburgh Pirates holds the record of 22 consecutive home wins set in 1926-27: Lefty Grove of Boston (1938-41) is 2nd with 20 straight home wins.

» April 8, 2000: Toronto's David Wells allows nine hits in shutting out the Rangers, 4–0. Kenny Rogers loses at home ending his 19-game home winning streak, the 3rd longest in ML history. The streaks dates to June 28, 1997 when Rogers was with the Yankees. Since then he's pitched for Oakland and the Mets.

» April 14, 2002: The Mariners top the Rangers, 9–7, as Ruben Sierra strokes five hits, including a double. Seattle rookie DH Ron Wright makes his ML debut in the game, going 0–for–3 and accounting for six outs on a strikeout, double play, and triple play. He becomes the 2nd player since 1950 to hit into a TP in his debut (Leo Foster did it for Atlanta in 1971) when Kenny Rogers fields his comebacker in the 4th. It is Wright's only appearance this year. Rogers allows a run in six innings, but the bullpen almost blows it for him. Alex Rodriguez has a pair of homers for Texas.
