Roenicke was the righthanded-hitting half of manager Earl Weaver's outstanding left field platoon in Baltimore from 1979 to 1985, alternating with John Lowenstein and often pinch hitting on days he didn't start. In 1982 Roenicke and Lowenstein combined for 45 HR and 140 RBI, and in '83 the duo hit 34 HR with 124 RBI, as the Orioles beat the Phillies in the WS. Roenicke was always content with his role as a semi-regular, and usually responded when called upon, topping 20 HR in a season twice (despite never reaching 400 at-bats) and providing solid defensive play in the outfield. In the 1983 LCS, he scored three times and hit a two-run HR as the Orioles beat Chicago 4-0 in Game Two. By 1986, however, the long-haired veteran role-player had been traded to the Yankees, and in 1987 he signed with the Braves, who released him outright in July 1988. His brother Ron was also a ML outfielder. (SCL)
    FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 7, 1977: In a swap that helps Baltimore, the Orioles trade pitchers Rudy May, Randy Miller, and Bryn Smith to the Expos for pitchers Don Stanhouse, Joe Kerrigan, and OF Gary Roenicke.

» May 8, 1979: Consecutive home runs by Eddie Murray, Lee May, and Gary Roenicke in the 6th power the Orioles to an 8–2 win over Oakland. Murray has now hit in 19 straight games.

» May 9, 1979: Gary Roenicke spoils Mike Norris's no-hit bid by hitting a double in the 7th inning. It's the only hit Norris allows as Oakland tops the Orioles, 4–2.

» May 25, 1982: Jim Palmer (2-2) wins his 250th career game for Baltimore, 10–3 over the Rangers. Gary Roenicke has a pair of home runs and John Lowenstein adds one.

» June 17, 1984: At Yankee Stadium, with one out in the 8th inning, Gary Roenicke hits a grand slam for the O's, as they beat New York, 6–2. Mike Flanagan benefits, but he's not the only winner as the home run makes Anne Sommers of College Park, MD a million dollars. Ms. Sommers had entered the Equitable Bank's Sweepstakes.

» July 13, 1985: The White Sox take a 9–0 lead over the Orioles and hang on for a 10–8 win. Gary Roenicke drives in six runs for the O's on a 2-run home run and a grand slam off Britt Burns, who goes all the way. Dennis Martinez takes to loss.

» January 8, 1987: Ten free agents (Tim Raines, Lance Parrish, Bob Horner, Andre Dawson, Rich Gedman, Ron Guidry, Bob Boone, Doyle Alexander, Toby Harrah, and Gary Roenicke) fail to meet a midnight deadline and thus will not be allowed to re-sign with their former clubs until May 1st if they are not offered contracts by new teams. The general lack of interest in the players will become the focus of the Players' Association's first anti-collusion suit against the owners.

» January 21, 1987: Free agent Gary Roenicke, who spent last season with the Yankees after eight years with the Orioles, signs with the Atlanta Braves.
