A talented Bahamian cricket player, Rodgers paid his own way to a Giants tryout in
Florida in 1954. He had to learn the rules of baseball, and not to jump away from
curveballs. A graceful 6'3", Rodgers adjusted. He became the Cubs' shortstop in 1962
as Ernie Banks moved to first.

The Giants Sam Jones throws a 2–0 one-hitter against the Dodgers, allowing only Jim Gilliam's controversial single in the 8th, a grounder SS Andre Rodgers has difficulty picking up. Willie Mays's 2-run home run against Don Drysdale accounts for all the scoring.
»October 31, 1960: The Giants trade IF Andre Rodgers to the Braves for SS Alvin Dark, then sign Dark to a 2-year contract as manager. Dark does not plan to be a playing manager.
»May 29, 1962: Ernie Banks makes a spectacular return from his May 25th beaning with three HRs and a double against the Braves at Wrigley Field. Three teammates hit HRs,
but the Cubs lose to the Braves, 11–9. Amado Samuel hits his 1st ML HR and Joe Torre and Joe Adcock also connect. The Cubs outhit the Braves, 15–8, but a Andre Rodgers error in the third opens the way for six unearned runs.
