Roberts changed organizations 11 times in his pro baseball career. "The way I look
at it," he said, "either I'm a bum or everybody wants me." Approached by 14 teams
after graduating from high school, he was a Phillies, A's, and Pirates farmhand before
being taken by San Diego in the 1968 expansion draft. He went 14-17 for the
last-place 1971 Padres, finishing second to Tom Seaver with a 2.10. With Houston in 1973, he recorded a career-best 17-11 record,
setting a club record with six shutouts. After a 16-17 season with the 1976 Tigers,
he had surgery to correct an arthritic knee. From 1977 through 1981, he worked for
six teams, never winning more than six games.
A good hitter for a pitcher, Roberts had a
career BA of .194 with seven home runs.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
|
| » May 26, 1971: The Padres Al "Iron Man" Santorini starts both ends of a doubleheader against the Astros. Santorini, facing a lineup of seven lefties, retires one batter before manager Preston Gomez lifts him for lefty Dave Roberts. It almost works, but Houston scores a run in the 9th to win, 2–1. In the nightcap, Santorini gives up two earned runs in six innings, but the Padres manage only one hit -- a 2-out single in the 7th by Ollie Brown -- off Larry Dierker. The Astros win, 8–0.
» May 31, 1973: Against Houston, Cubs pitcher Fergie Jenkins gives up home run to Jesus Alou, but holds on as the Cubs win, 16–8. Dave Roberts takes the loss. The tally of Alou family homers off Jenkins is as follows: Jesus homered on July 7th and 23rd, 1967 while with the Giants: Felipe Alou homered on April 25, 1968 as a Brave; Matty Alou hit a homer on September 5, 1971 while with the Cards.
» June 28, 1979: The Pirates trade pitchers Ed Whitson, Al Holland, and Fred Breining to the Giants for P Dave Roberts and infielders Bill Madlock and Lenny Randle. Madlock, whose average dropped after the Giants moved him to 2B, will rebound with the Bucs. |
