Signed out of the University of Virginia for a substantial bonus, Roach gathered splinters on the Braves' bench for two years before going to the minors for seasoning. Recalled in May 1957 when Red Schoendienst was hurt, he hit .309 until he tore up his knee in August. Two years later he managed .300 in 48 games as a utility man. (MC)
