Rhem's achievements as the fireballing Cardinals ace (20-7) in their 1926 championship year are obscured by a bizarre episode arising from his weakness for drink. In 1930, with St. Louis and Brooklyn in a stretch-run battle for first place, Rhem vanished. Reappearing two days later, he said he had been kidnapped, evidently by Dodger partisans, sequestered in a hotel room, and forced to drink an incapacitating amount of liquor. Rhem survived the incident, lasted six more years in the NL, and was disappointingly ineffective in World Series appearances. (ADS)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 16, 1926: At Philadelphia, the Cards sweep a pair from the Phils to tie for first place. They open with a 23–3 pasting, a game in which 36 players are used, 22 by the Phils. The Cards plate 12 runs in the 3rd inning, with all the Cardinals getting a hit except Billy Southworth, who is robbed of a double by Freddy Leach's catch. Taylor Douthit has a walk and single, two stolen bases, and two runs scored in the game. Flint Rhem is the winning pitcher. The Cards lighten up in game 2, winning 10–2, behind Art Reinhart.

» September 24, 1926: At the Polo Grounds, the Cardinals clinch the pennant by beating the Giants 6–4 behind Flint Rhem and Bill Sherdel. Billy Southworth homers to help beat his old teammates, negating Bill Terry's 3-run home run off Rhem. The Cards are now ahead of Cincinnati by three games with two to play. The Reds lose to the Phillies today, 9–2.

» October 6, 1926: In game 4, the Yankees tee off on Flint Rhem (20-7) and four other Cardinal hurlers for 10 runs and 14 hits, while Waite Hoyt (16-12) strands 10 Cardinal runners for a 10–5 win. Babe Ruth hits three home runs, to fulfill his October 1st promise to a bedridden 11-year-old, Johnny Sylvester. Ruth's 3rd clout, in the 6th, is the longest blast ever seen in St. Louis. It clears the park and goes through the window of an auto dealer across the street. In the 4th, Taylor Douthit and Chick Hafey collide in the OF as the ball drops; Douthit is sidelined for the rest of the Series.

» June 21, 1927: The Cardinals sweep two games from the Cubs, but lose SS Tommy Thevenow when he breaks his leg in the 4th inning of the 2nd game. It will be Rabbit redux, as Rabbit Maranville will be signed to take the shortstop spot. Jess Haines wins the opener, 6–5 in 13 innings over Charlie Root; Flint Rhem coasts to a 12–3 win in the nitecap as the Cards slam Buck Brillheart.

» September 29, 1928: Behind Bill Sherdel and Flint Rhem, the Cardinals win the National League pennant with a 3–1 win at Boston while the Cubs are beating New York, 6–2. The final margin is two games over the Giants, four over the Cubs.

» September 15, 1930: Newspapers carry the story of the disappearance of Cardinals P Flint Rhem on the eve of a crucial series in Brooklyn.

» September 16, 1930: Flint Rhem returns to the Cardinals with an improbable story that he was kidnapped by gamblers and forced to drink bootleg whiskey.

» October 2, 1930: Flint Rhem is a surprise starter for the Cardinals but he fails to astonish the Athletics batters. He gives up 6 earned runs in less than 4 innings, all the Athletics need to win 6-1 behind George Earnshaw's 6-hit pitching.

» September 6, 1931: The visiting Cardinals tighten their hold on first place by shutting out the Reds twice, winning 3–0 and 7–0. Flint Rhem allows three hits in the opener to beat Si Johnson, then Syl Johnson wins the nitecap over Larry Benton. The Reds are credited with a triple play in the 2nd inning of game 2, going from LF Nick Cullop to C Lena Styles to 3B Joe Stripp to 2B Tony Cuccinello. Cooch's last out is a hidden ball trick and since the ball is never returned to the pitcher, a triple play is recorded.

» June 4, 1932: The Phillies get Cardinals problem P Flint Rhem.

» July 29, 1934: Flint Rhem comes within a lazily fielded bunted ball to 3B of pitching a no-hitter for Boston against the Dodgers. He wins 1-0.

» July 27, 1936: In an exhibition game against a semipro shoe company, Paul Dean is hammered for six hits and four runs in four innings. The Cards then rally with Flint Rhem and Pepper Martin on the mound to win, 8–5. a tearful Dean threatens to quit after the rout.
