Rettenmund played halfback at Ball State and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He chose baseball and played in four World Series and six LCS with three different clubs. He was named TSN Minor League Player of the Year in 1968 when he batted .331 with 22 HR for Rochester (International League). He was the AL champion Orioles' leading hitter in 1970 (.322) and 1971 (.318). In the NL he became a platoon player and top pinch hitter, and he went a league-leading 21-for-67 in the pinch for the 1977 Padres, the eighth most pinch hits ever in a single season. (JCA)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 30, 1969: Merv Rettenmund drives in three runs to lead the Orioles to a 6–3 win over the Angels. The O's score their last run on a single by Brooks Robinson in the 7th and three consecutive passed balls by Jose Azcue which ties the American League record for catchers. He is the first backstop on the 20th-C list not to be catching Hoyt Wilhelm, though Wilhelm comes in to relief Vern Geishert in the 8th.

» June 25, 1970: Behind the Red Sox 7–0 after five innings, the Orioles tie the game in the 9th on a Merv Rettenmund home run and a double by Andy Etchebarren. The Orioles finally win it when they score six runs in the 14th inning.

» October 15, 1970: For the 3rd time the Orioles overcome a 3–0 deficit to bury the Reds 9–3 and win the World Championship four games to one. Frank Robinson and Merv Rettenmund each homer and drive in two runs. Brooks Robinson, the "human vacuum cleaner," easily wins the World Series MVP award.

» October 9, 1971: The Orioles win Game One of the World Series over the Pirates 5–3 behind Dave McNally's 3-hitter and Merv Rettenmund's 3-run homer. Frank Robinson also homers, off Dock Ellis, who he homered off of in the All-Star Game -- a first.

» December 4, 1973: The Reds trade P Ross Grimsley to the Orioles for OF Merv Rettenmund and INF Junior Kennedy. Grimsley will win 18 in 1974 for the Orioles.

» April 12, 1974: In Atlanta, the Reds roll over the Braves, 14–2. Merv Rettenmund hits a 2nd inning grand slam off vet Jack Aker.

» May 21, 1977: Merv Rettenmund hits a 3-run home run in the 21st inning to give the Padres an 11–8 win over the Expos. The two teams combine for a ML-record nine intentional passes (Mtl 5, SD 4) in an effort to end the game earlier, but to no avail.
