Trained as a short reliever in the Phillies organization, Reed found success as a Triple-A starter but did his best work in relief for the last-place 1985 Indians (eight saves) and the 1987 Mariners (seven saves). He pitched the first no-hitter in Western Carolina University history. With a career-high 101 2/3 innings 1989, Reed teamed with Mike Jackson to form an effective set-up tandem for closer Mike Schooler. He then bombed in 1990 with a career-high 4.82 ERA. (ME/GL)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» September 11, 1982: Nine months after re-signing him to a 3-year, $2 million contract, the Indians trade pitcher John Denny to Philadelphia for minor leaguers Jerry Reed, LeRoy Smith, and Wil Culmer.

» August 12, 1985: Baltimore's Wayne Gross and Larry Sheets connect for back-to-back solo pinch homers in the 9th inning, off Cleveland's Jerry Reed, but it is not enough to overcome the Indians 5-run 1st inning. The Tribe wins, 8–5. It's the 2nd time that a pair of Orioles have pinch hit back to back homers, and just the 2nd time in American League history.
