Porter was an outstanding hitter trapped in the minor leagues until he was 28. He hit better than .300 six straight years with Baltimore (International League) before Cleveland was at last able to purchase his contract. In his first four years with the Indians, he continued at a .300 clip, including a career-high .350 in 1930. Twice he scored more than 100 runs. Known as Twitchy because of his batting style, he constantly wiggled, gyrated, and waved his bat. (NLM)
