Washington moved Cecil Travis to third base to make room for the cat-quick Pofahl,
for whom they'd paid $40,000. But Pofahl had injured his arm in an off-season taxi
accident and could barely get the ball to first base. His .234 BA didn't help his
case. Travis was back at shortstop in 1941, and Pofahl, after returning to the minors,
gave up baseball for wartime defense work.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»March 20, 1943: LF Bob Johnson, a star for the Athletics since 1933, is traded to the Senators for 3B Bob Estalella and Jimmy Pofahl. Johnson has led the A's in RBIs in each of the last seven seasons: no team has ever traded a slugger with that mark.
