One of many young pitchers developed by the Dodgers after WWII, Podbielan finally
got a chance to start regularly when he was traded to the Reds. He had little success.
One day in June 1953, Reds manager Rogers Hornsby mercilessly left him on the mound
into the eighth inning while the powerful Dodgers pounded him for 17 hits, including
seven doubles, a triple, and two home runs.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»September 30, 1951:
Jackie Robinson hits an upper deck home run in the 14th inning off Robin Roberts, who came on in the 8th, to give the Dodgers a critical 9–8 win over the Phils. Robbie saves the game in the 13th by making a great catch of an Eddie Waitkus line drive and throwing to 2B for a DP. In the process, he injures his elbow. Reliever Bud Podbielan is the winner, the victory keeping Brooklyn in a first place tie with the Giants. Catcher Andy Seminick of the Phils walks five times, the first Phillie to do so in a game. The Dodgers overcome a 6–1 deficit to win and set the stage for a playoff with the Giants.
»May 18, 1953: Redlegs P Bud Podbielan walks 13 batters in 10 innings against Brooklyn, but holds on to win 2–1 on a Ted Kluszewski homer off starter Preacher Roe. No one has walked 13 in the National League since 1918. The Dodgers strand 18 against the former Dodger pitcher, tying the NL mark.
