FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 15, 1992: Red Sox P Jeff Reardon moves into first place on the all-time save list with number 342. It comes in Boston's 1–0 win over the Yankees. John Dopson is the winner over Scott Sanderson. Phil Plantier's homer is the only score.

» October 3, 1992: In a battle of also-rans at Fenway Park, the Red Sox trip the Yankees, 7–5, with the win going to Gardner, who throws 6 2/3 innings of relief. Scott Cooper and Phil Plantier hits HRs for the Sox, who end the season's power outage with 84 home runs. Except for the strike year of '94, this is the only season since 1945 the Sox have not reached 100 dingers. Slugger Jack Clark drops from 28 to 5 road homers this year.

» December 28, 1994: The Astros obtain OF Derek Bell, IF Ricky Gutierrez, P Pedro Martinez, OF Phil Plantier, and IF Craig Shipley from the Padres in exchange for 3B Ken Caminiti, SS Andujar Cedeno, OF Steve Finley, 1B Roberto Petagine, P Brian Williams, and a player to be named. P Sean Fesh will go to the Padres next May to complete the 12-player deal, the biggest in the major leagues since 1957.

» June 13, 1997: In a swap of fading former lefty All-Stars, the Padres send Fernando Valenzuela (2–8) to the Cardinals for Danny Jackson in a 6-player trade Friday night. The Padres add IF Scott Livingstone and OF Phil Plantier. San Diego receives P Rich Batchelor and OF-1B Mark Sweeney.
