Pitler was the Pirates' second baseman in 1917, then played and managed in the minors for many years. He coached the Brooklyn Dodgers under four managers, and was a loyal lieutenant to all and a friend to a generation of players. He became a scout rather than move to Los Angeles with the Dodgers. (JK)
