Cub manager Leo Durocher called Phillips "another Willie Mays" when he joined Chicago in 1966. Three years later when he was traded away, Durocher termed him the most disappointing player he'd ever managed. A natural leadoff hitter, the fleet Panamanian refused to bat leadoff. Durocher often batted him eighth, limiting the opportunities to utilize his speed (32 stolen bases in 1966) and power. He hit 16 homers in '66, but drove in only 36 runs. He improved to 17 homers and 70 RBI in 1967, then regressed to 13 and 32. (MC)
