The 6'2" 225-lb lefthanded batter hit .367 in 1936, the record for a catcher qualifying for the batting title. Hypochondria and a refusal to fly (The Grounded Blimp) limited Phelps' career. (TG)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 31, 1937: A Memorial Day crowd of 61,756, the 2nd-largest crowd in Polo Grounds history, sees the Dodgers end Carl Hubbell's consecutive-game winning streak at 24 over two seasons. Babe Phelps leads the way, going 5-for-6, as Brooklyn routs King Carl in the 4th inning and wins 10–3. Although Hubbell loses the first game of the doubleheader, he is honored in between games when Babe Ruth makes the presentation of the National League's 1936 MVP Award. The Giants take the nitecap, 5–4.

» July 1, 1938: Dodgers C Babe Phelps fractures the thumb on his throwing hand for the second time this year.

» September 5, 1938: C Babe Phelps of the Dodgers breaks a bone in his throwing hand for the 3rd time this season.

» February 14, 1941: The entire Dodger squad leave New York to train in Havana, Cuba for most of the spring. Babe Phelps, a reluctant traveler and still unsigned, will leave the team in Miami, rather than take a boat, and return to Maryland.

» May 1, 1941: Reds P Bucky Walters stops the Dodgers, 2–1 in 11 innings. The Dodgers load the bases in the 11th, but Leo Durocher and Babe Phelps strike out to end the game. Curt Davis takes the loss.

» December 12, 1941: The Pirates send All-Star SS Arky Vaughan to Brooklyn for P Luke Hamlin, C Babe Phelps, OF Johnny Wasdell, and 2B Pete Coscarart.

» December 30, 1943: Happy New Year to a couple of Babes. The Phillies send the much-traveled Babe Dahlgren to Pittsburgh for catcher Babe Phelps and cash.
