Big Jeff Pfeffer was the older brother of more-successful pitcher Jeff Pfeffer, though neither was really named Jeff. The name was first given to Francis Xavier when he came up in 1905 while James J. Jeffries (Big Jeff) was the heavyweight champ; Pfeffer resembled the prizefighter. He hurled a no-hitter for the Braves against the Reds in 1907. Edward Joseph Pfeffer came along in 1911, Big Jeff's last season, and was called simply Jeff. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY

» September 3, 1906: At the Polo Grounds, the Giants flatten the Beaneaters twice, 4-0 and 3-2. Christy Mathewson wins his 17th in the opener, beating a wild Big Jeff Pfeffer. Cy Seymour completes the scoring with a solo homer in the 8th inning. Hooks Wiltse, in relief of Red Ames, wins the nitecap.

» October 4, 1906: Boston (NL) hurlers Vive Lindaman and Irv Young lose 3-2 and 2-1 to Brooklyn. The Beaneaters finish last with 102 losses. Four hardworking hurlers bear the brunt: Young and Gus Dorner each lose 25 games; Lindaman, 23; and Frank "Big Jeff" Pfeffer, 22.

» May 8, 1907: Frank Pfeffer of the Boston Doves pitches a 6-0 no-hitter against the Reds. He will be known as "Big Jeff" until his younger, and bigger, brother Ed "Jeff" Pfeffer becomes a star hurler for Brooklyn in 1913.

» February 11, 1911: The Cubs acquire 2B Dave Shean from Boston for 3B Scotty Ingerton and righty Big Jeff Pfeffer. The is the 2nd time that Boston has traded with the Cubs for Big Jeff.
