Released by the Astro and Indian organizations due to arm problems, Perry was given a change by the Cardinals. He tallied a 1.85 ERA over two-plus minor league seasons and became a capable short reliever at St. Louis. Despite his consistent work he was traded to Cincinnati for Scott Terry, and then to the Cubs for backup first baseman Leon Durham. Perry became a free agent in November 1990 after refusing assignment to the minors, but no clubs showed any interest. (FO/JT)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 18, 1988: In a deal made possible by the emergence of rookie 1B Mark Grace, the Cubs deal veteran 1B Leon Durham to the Reds for reliever Pat Perry.

» August 6, 1988: Rich Gossage becomes the 2nd pitcher in ML history to record 300 saves by retiring one batter in the Cubs 7–4 win over Philadelphia. Reliever Pat Perry, in his only plate appearance for the Cubs this year, belts his only ML home run, a 2-run home run off Mike Maddux. Perry was traded for Leon "Bull" Durham and in one at bat matches Durham's output for the Reds.
