The 5'5" 148-lb Patek was the smallest major-league player of his time, but he possessed the range and arm to be an outstanding shortstop, three times an All-Star. He was particularly adept at turning double plays. His speed and aggressive baserunning were his primary offensive weapons. He led the AL in triples (11) in 1971 and stolen bases (53) in 1977. For his career he totaled 385 steals. He hit for the cycle at Minnesota on July 9, 1971, in his first year with the Royals. Not usually a power hitter, he hit three home runs in one game for the Angels in Boston on June 20, 1980. (EW)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» December 2, 1970: In a 6-player swap with the Pirates, the Royals acquire SS Fred Patek. The Pirates pick up P Bob Johnson in the deal, but the righty will go just 17–16 in three years.

» July 9, 1971: In the Royals, 6–3 win over the Twins, Freddie Patek hits for the cycle.

» October 13, 1976: The Royals even the Series again with a 7-4 win, despite 2 Graig Nettles HRs. Freddie Patek is the big hitter with 3 RBI.

» October 4, 1978: Kansas City notches 16 hits off three Yankee pitchers to even the American League series with a 10–4 win. Freddie Patek's surprise homer in the 6th with a man on seals the victory.

» June 20, 1980: 5 foot four inch Fred Patek, one of the smallest players of his era, hits three home runs and a double in California's 20–2 rout of the Red Sox at Fenway Park. Patek will end the year with five homers.

» June 28, 1991: Reds SS Barry Larkin hits three consecutive home runs in an 8-5 win over the Astros, giving him a major league record-tying five over a 2-game span. Ernie Banks and Fred Patek are the only other SS to homer three times in a game.

» July 11, 1992: Atlanta 2B Jeff Blauser hits three home runs in a 7–4 win over the Cubs. Blauser had hit only 39 round-trippers in the previous six seasons. He becomes only the 4th SS ever to hit three homers in a game, joining Ernie Banks, Barry Larkin, and Fred Patek.
