Book Excerpts
» "Passarella, the first-base umpire, called Sain out": Carl Erskine

Passarella was the first ML umpire to be inducted into military service during WWII. He returned in 1945 and worked in the AL for nine more years. Later he became a cast member of the TV show The Streets of San Francisco. He made a controversial call in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game Five of the 1952 WS when he called Yankee runner Johnny Sain out at first. The Dodgers won in the 11th inning. A published photo taken with a high-speed camera later showed that Sain had been safe. (RTM)
