A 6'5" 230-lb hard-hitting columnist who used a cutting sense of humor and could back up every word he wrote, Parker had the truest ear for the spoken word since Ring Lardner. He occasionally spiced his New York Daily Mirror column with poetry. He started as a baseball writer in 1924 under sports editor Gene Fowler and wrote a column for 37 years until the Mirror folded in 1963. Before his death in 1967, he did a brief stint with the New York Journal-American. (NLM)
