Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, the home of the Pirates since 1970, is imploded before thousands of onlookers. The team will play in new PNC Park this year.
» March 31, 2001: After 31 years in Three Rivers Stadium, the Pirates move into their new $262 million home at PNC Park, losing to the Mets, 4–3, in an exhibition game. The 38,000 seat stadium is nestled at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers with a spectacular view of the city.
» April 9, 2001: Sean Casey's four hits and five RBIs to lead the Reds over the Pirates, 8-2, in the first game ever at PNC Park. The occasion is marred by the death of Willie Stargell just a few hours before game time. Pops died after an extended illness and the Bucs pay tribute with a 90 second visual presentation.
» April 21, 2001: Jon Lieber gets his first win and Sammy Sosa hits the first grand-slam at the new PNC Park in Pittsburgh.
» July 6, 2002: The Astros defeat the Pirates, 10–2. Houston OF Daryle Ward becomes the first player to hit a home run into the Allegheny River beyond PNC Park's right–field wall on the fly.
