FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 10, 1972: Phillies GM Paul Owens takes over as field manager after firing Frank Lucchesi.

» December 2, 1974: After several rounds of bourbon are consumed by Phillies GM Paul Owens and Detroit GM Jim Campbell at the winter meetings, Owens agrees to trade promising catcher Bob Boone and P Larry Christensen to Detroit for veterans Bill Freehan and Jim Northrup. Tomorrow morning, Owens won't recall the trade and the deal is never made. "How do you unshake a handshake?" says the disappointed Campbell.

» July 18, 1983: Despite being in first place in the National League East, the Phillies fire manager Pat Corrales because the team is "not playing up to its potential." GM Paul Owens will manage the club instead. Managing his first game, the Phils drop a 9–2 decision as the Astros shell Steve Carlton. It's his 11th loss of the year and drops the Phils into a tie for 2nd place with the Pirates.

» August 24, 1983: 1B Pete Rose does not play in the Phillies 5–3 loss to the Giants, ending his consecutive games played streak at 745. Manager Paul Owens had planned to use Rose as a pinch hitter in the 10th inning, but Joel Youngblood ends the game with a 2-run home run off Steve Carlton in the bottom of the 9th.

» September 30, 1984: Phillies interim manager Paul Owens resigns following a season-ending doubleheader loss to the Pirates and will move into the club's front office. Coach John Felske will succeed Owens as manager next season.
