Ed Ott was a rough-and-tumble catcher, adept at blocking the plate, and a dependable lefthanded hitter. The converted outfielder was Pittsburgh's starting catcher from 1977 to 1980, and batted a career-high .273 with 51 RBI in the Pirates' 1979 World Championship year. After he spent 1981 with the Angels, his career was ended by a torn rotator cuff. (ME)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» August 12, 1977: The Pirates win twice over the Mets 3–2 and 6–5. In the 2nd game, Mets 2B Felix Millan suffers a broken collarbone in a brawl with catcher Ed Ott, ending Millan's 12-year ML career.

» August 11, 1979: The Pirates Ed Ott hits a grand slam off Phillie reliever Tug McGraw in the 8th inning as the Bucs win 14–11. It is the 4th grand slam that McGraw has yielded this year, setting a new NL mark and tying him for this questionable honor with Detroit's Ray Narleski (1959).

» October 11, 1979: Manny Sanguillen's pinch-hit, 2-out single in the 9th scores Ed Ott and breaks a 2–2 tie as the Pirates win 3–2 and even the Series at one game apiece.

» August 10, 1981: Seattle's Julio Cruz is caught stealing by California's Ed Ott on a pitchout, ending his consecutive stolen base streak at 32. Cruz tied the American League record set by Willie Wilson.
