In Philadelphia, the Phils edge the Padres, 9–8, in 12 innings when Ricky Otero singles home the winner with two outs. Mark Whiten drives in five runs for the winners on two homers. The first place Padres suffer a blow when Wally Joyner fractured left thumb sliding in the 4th inning. He will be out of action for six weeks.
