» June 6, 1983: The Twins select pitcher Tim Belcher with the first pick in the annual June free-agent draft, but Belcher will reject their $125,000 signing bonus offer and pitch for Team USA in the Pan American Games instead. He is the only first-rounder who doesn't sign. Belcher will be the first selected in the January 1984 draft. The Twins 2nd round pick, P Billy Swift, also doesn't sign. The Reds take Kurt Stillwell with the 2nd pick overall and Chris Sabo on round 2. Roger Clemens is taken with the 19th pick. The A's get Terry Steinbach, Brian Dorsett, and Greg Cadaret on the 9th, 10th and 11th rounds. The Phillies pick Ricky Jordan on the 1st round. The Reds pick up Stillwell in the 1st round, Sabo and Joe Oliver in the 2nd round, Lenny Harris (5th) and Jeff Montgomery (9th). » April 28, 1991:
After recording the final out in his save of the Reds 4-3 win over the Cubs, Cincinnati pitcher Rob Dibble takes the ball from catcher Joe Oliver and hurls it into the center field bleachers, where it strikes Meg Porter, a 27-year-old first-grade teacher. Dibble later apologizes for his tantrum, saying, "I have to mature. I have to come to grips with it." The righthander will receive a 4-game suspension for his actions.
» August 29, 1996:
Catcher Joe Oliver drives home seven runs to lead Cincinnati to an 18-7 pounding of Colorado. Oliver hits a grand slam and a 3-run double.
» March 22, 1997:
Reds catcher Joe Oliver tears a ligament in his thumb making a tag at home plate, and will need surgery to repair it. Oliver will be out of action at least a month.
» July 23, 1999:
The Pirates obtain C Joe Oliver and C Humberto Cota from the Devil Rays for OF Jose Guillen and P Jeff Sparks. Guillen, who drove in 154 runs in his first two seasons, has been sub-par this year after arriving at spring training a month late due to visa problems.
» November 21, 2000: The Yankees sign free agent C Joe Oliver to a contract.
