One of the few catchers to wear glasses, Nolan rejected a football scholarship to the University of Missouri to sign with the Mets. A second-stringer, in 1981 he batted .309 and caught a career-high 81 games for Cincinnati in place of an injured Johnny Bench. He had four knee operations in nine years. (EW)
