David Bell has four RBI for the M's, while Trot Nixon homers and Manny Ramirez and Troy O'Leary go back-to-back in the 4th.

» July 14, 2001: Mets manager Bobby Valentine wins his 1,000th career game as pitchers Glendon Rusch and Armando Benitez combine to defeat Boston on a 1–hitter. When Rusch is unable to cover 1B, Trot Nixon's 1st inning bunt single is Boston's only hit in the 2–0 game.

Pedro Martinez (20-4) allows two runs in the 1st inning, then coasts to his 20th win of the season as the Red Sox beat the hapless Orioles, 13–2. Trot Nixon hits a grand slam and Johnny Damon a pair of homers to keep the Sox playoff hopes alive. Martinez joins Derek Lowe in giving the Sox the first pair of 20-game winners since 1949.
