Twin brothers Russ and Roy Nixon were both signed by the Indians, but only Russ made it to the majors. He batted a career-high .301 as the Indians' regular catcher in 1958. In 1960, he was twice traded from Cleveland to Boston; the original March deal was called off when Sammy White refused to report, but a second trade was completed in June. Often felled by injuries, Nixon appeared in nearly a quarter of his ML games as a pinch hitter. A longtime resident of the Cincinnati area, he managed in the Reds' farm system from 1970 to 1975, joined their ML coaching staff in 1976, and replaced John McNamara as ML manager in July of 1982. Dismissed after a last-place 1983 finish, he coached for the Expos and Braves and then was named Braves manager in 1989. (EW)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» May 15, 1957: At Baltimore, the Indians rap Mike Fornieles for five hits and three runs in the 16th to defeat the Orioles, 11–8. The Tribe had scored three in the 8th after an error by Billy Gardner and three more in the 14th after an error by Wayne Causey. Gardner steals home in the 14th for one Bird run and the 3rd run scores on Russ Nixon's wild throw.

» March 16, 1960: The Red Sox send catcher Sammy White and OF Jim Marshall to the Indians for C Russ Nixon. The trade is later canceled when White retires.

» June 13, 1960: The Indians trade C Russ Nixon and OF Carroll Hardy to the Red Sox for Marty Keough and P Ted Bowsfield. Nixon had been traded in March to the Red Sox for Sammy White, but the deal fell through when White refused to report. Hardy once pinch hit for Roger Maris in Cleveland, and will do the same for Ted Williams this year, the only time Williams will ever have a pinch hitter.

» May 4, 1962: The Red Sox stage a 12-run uprising in the 5th inning to defeat the White Sox, 13–6. Ed Bressoud and Carl Yastrzemski have two hits in the frame as does pinch hitter Russ Nixon.

» August 31, 1965: Boston C Russ Nixon ties a major-league record with three run-scoring sacrifice flies in the 2nd game at Washington. Boston wins 8–5 after taking the opener, 4–0.

» July 21, 1982: Mired in last place in the NL West, 24 games below .500, the Reds fire manager John McNamara and replace him with 3B coach Russ Nixon.

» October 4, 1983: Having finished last in the National League West for the 2nd straight year, the Reds drop manager Russ Nixon and replace him with Vern Rapp.

» May 23, 1988: Braves manager Chuck Tanner is fired and replaced by Russ Nixon. The Braves were 12-27 under Tanner, last in the National League West.

» June 22, 1990: The last-place Braves fire manager Russ Nixon and replace him with GM Bobby Cox, who last managed Toronto in 1985.
