Niles perpetrated a classic baserunning error during a 1909 Red Sox game in Washington. With lumbering Babe Danzig on first, Niles hit a shot to the outfield and began to race around the bases. Danzig, thinking the ball would be caught, stayed put, while the fleet Niles, head down, steamed past him. The ball was chased down and relayed in, but Niles never slowed, sliding home in a cloud of dust under the tag. Sure that he had hit an inside-the-park home run, he jogged nonchalantly to the bench, but was called out for passing Danzig, who was standing forlornly on second base. Niles was credited with a single. (JK)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» November 5, 1907: The Yankees trade 2B Jimmy Williams and OF Danny Hoffman to the Browns for P Fred Glade, speedy 2B Harry Niles, and OF Charlie Hemphill. Glade will pitch just five games in 1908 before retiring.

» June 30, 1908: Cy Young's 3rd career no-hitter is an 8-0 Boston win over New York. Cy almost duplicates his perfect game of 1904, walking just one batter-leadoff hitter Harry Niles. Niles is then caught stealing and the next 27 batters make out. Cy also tallies three hits and drives in half the Pilgrim's runs off Rube Manning. At 41 years and three months, he is the oldest pitcher to turn the no-hit trick. Nolan Ryan will beat him in 1990 at the age of 43.

» August 30, 1910: New York's Tom Hughes pitches a no-hitter for nine 1/3 innings before giving up a hit to Cleveland's Harry Niles. Hughes then collapses, allowing five runs in the 11th to lose 5–0.
