» July 6, 1995: The Astros defeat the Padres, 5-4 in 12 innings, as Houston pitchers fan 17 SD batters. Padres' SS Andujar Cedeno fans five times, while teammates Melvin Nieves and Roberto Petagine whiff four times each. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no team over the past 15 years has had three players strike out four or more times in the same game. SD pitchers fan 15 Houston players themselves.

» March 22, 1996: The Tigers trade Ps Sean Bergman and Cade Gaspar, and OF Todd Steverson, to the Padres in exchange for OF Melvin Nieves, C Raul Casanova, and P Richie Lewis.

» April 2, 1996: Cecil Fielder pulls a belated April fool's joke on the Twins when, in the 9th inning, he takes off for 2nd base with a 3-2 count on Melvin Nieves and beats the throw from catcher Greg Myers. Fielder's swipe is his first in 1,096 games in the majors. Tiger rookie RHP Clint Sodowsky allows seven hits in five innings in his debut, and the Tigers win 10–6.

» April 6, 1996: Tiger CF Melvin Nieves bangs two doubles, a triple and a homer as the Tigers top the A's, 6–1. Nieves was acquired from the Padres in a spring training trade.

» November 11, 1997: The Reds swap P Donne Wall and C Paul Bako to the Tigers in exchange for OF Melvin Nieves.
