Pitchers liked Nieto behind the plate for the way he called games and his strong arm. The Cardinals hoped he would be Darrell Porter's successor, but Nieto never came within 50 points of his .279 rookie average. His one moment in the spotlight came in Game Four of the 1985 World Series, when he surprised with a two-strike suicide-squeeze bunt that scored the final run of St. Louis' 3-0 win. Five months later he was traded for Montreal Expos infielder Fred Manrique, and never again got more than 105 at-bats in any season. (FO/JT)
