Niehoff spent more than 50 years in baseball. He switched from third base to second
for 1915 after the Phillies acquired him and led NL second basemen in errors, but
his good range (second in the league in assists) and tolerable hitting (.238 with
21 steals and 60 runs) helped Philadelphia to the NL pennant. In 1916 he led the
league with 42 doubles, led second basemen in errors and double plays, and finished
second in assists again. A broken leg in mid-1918 finished his ML career. He played,
then managed in the minors, coached for the Giants, and scouted for the Yankees and
Angels, retiring at age 85.
