Nicholls's great speed allowed him to beat out many infield hits. He hit .302 in
his rookie 1907 season with the Athletics, fifth in the AL, but dropped to .216 the
next year and fielded just .913. He lost the shortstop job to Jack Barry in 1909
and died from typhoid fever and peritonitis in 1911.
