FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» June 1, 1992: The Astros select Cal State–Fullerton 3B Phil Nevin with the 1st pick in the amateur draft. Picking 6th, the Yanks take Derek Jeter, who will reject a University of Michigan offer to sign with New York. The Marlins will use their 1st pick on catcher Charles Johnson. The A's take Jason Giambi (2nd round) and the Cards get T.J. Mathews on the 36th. The Brewers take Ken Felder on the 1st round but he will prove a flop: their best pick is Scott Karl (6th round). Marvin Benard goes to the Giants on the 50th round.

» June 8, 1997: In Detroit, Randy Johnson, overwhelms to Tigers, striking out 15 and not allowing a hit until the 8th inning, as the Mariners win, 2–0. The Big Unit extends his scoreless streak to 29 innings. Johnson (9-1) gives up a leadoff single to Phil Nevin in the eighth to hand Brian Moehler the loss.

» July 21, 1997: Wilson Alvarez strikes out four Detroit batters in the 7th inning, with Phil Nevin fanning on a wild pitch, in leading the White Sox to a 3–0 win over Detroit. Alvarez is the first White Sox pitcher and 28th player to strike out four batters in an inning.

» March 29, 1999: The Padres obtain C–IF Phil Nevin and minor league P Keith Volkman from the Angels in exchange for IF Andy Sheets and minor league OF Gus Kennedy. Nevin will go on the DL in three days because of a strained muscle.

» July 2, 1999: Phil Nevin and Carlos Baerga hit back-to-back pinch-hitter home runs in the 9th inning, as San Diego defeats Colorado, 15-3.

» September 9, 1999: The Padres defeat the Expos, 10-3, in a game where they are nearly allowed four outs in the 7th inning. When Montreal's Reggie Sanders strikes out for the 3rd out, the umpires don't notice and the players do not leave the field. Phil Nevin comes to the plate and runs the count to 2-1 against Expos P Ted Lilly before someone in the Montreal dugout points out the problem to home plate ump Jerry Layne.

» June 14, 2001: Phil Nevin hits his 2nd homer of the game, a grand slam in the 8th, to give the Padres a 6–4 win over Oakland.

» June 19, 2001: Trailing 2–0 with two outs in the 9th and an 0–2 count by Robb Nen, San Diego scores three runs and wins in the 15th, 4–3. Rich Aurilia's throwing error with two out allows Phil Nevin to score in the 15th. Barry Bonds belts his 37th homer, setting a mark for dingers before the All-star game. Pinch running, Rickey Henderson steals 3B, snapping a swipe drought of 24 games, his longest. Rickey will still top 20 steals this year for the 23rd straight time.

» November 29, 2002: The Reds and Padres reach an agreement to trade Ken Griffey, Jr. for Phil Nevin, but Nevin, with a no–trade clause in his contract, nixes the deal. He says he would only agree to a trade to a West Coast team that trains in Arizona. Griffey tore a tendon in his knee during the first week, setting up another season limited by leg injuries. He also pulled a hamstring and strained hip muscles, limiting him to 70 games, a .264 average, eight homers and 23 RBIs. In a week, the White Sox will turn down an offer of Griffey for Magglio Ordonez.
