After a promising 4-3, 2.41 season for Baltimore in 1968, Nelson was the Royals' first pick in the expansion draft. He was 7-13 despite a 3.31 ERA as their number-four starter in 1969 and then spent most of 1970 on the DL with shoulder trouble. He made it back in 1972, and was 11-6 with the fifth-best ERA (2.08) in the AL. On August 23 he pitched a one-hitter against the Red Sox (Ben Oglivie singled in the seventh inning). That winter he was traded with Richie Scheinblum to Cincinnati for Hal McRae and Wayne Simpson. Nelson sat out much of the rest of his career with injuries, pitching well when healthy. (WOR)
FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» November 29, 1967: The White Sox reacquire SS Luis Aparicio, with OF Russ Snyder and 1B/OF John Matias, from Baltimore for pitchers Bruce Howard and Roger Nelson and IF Don Buford.

» August 25, 1968: After five hours: 27 minutes, the Orioles defeat the Red Sox, 3–2, in 18 innings when Brooks Robinson drives in Boog Powell. Roger Nelson pitches the last seven innings for the win over Stephenson.

» October 15, 1968: Roger Nelson is the initial choice of the Royals in the American League expansion draft. Don Mincher is the Pilots' first choice. Other Seattle selections include Tommy Harper, Tommy Davis, Gary Bell, and Lou Piniella. Kansas City chooses Wally Bunker, Moe Drabowsky, Hoyt Wilhelm, and Joe Foy.

» April 9, 1969: The Royals, who debuted with a 4–3 win over the Twins in 12 innings, travel further to win by the same score in 17 frames. The Twins final run comes with the score tied 2–2 in the 5th inning, when with Roger Nelson pitching, Rod Carew steals home for the first time in his career. Billy Martin and Carew had worked on the play in spring training, where Carew had twice swiped home. Carew will be 6–6 on attempts before being caught at home.

» August 23, 1972: Kansas City's Roger Nelson shuts out the Red Sox, 3–0. Ben Oglivie's single in the 8th is the only hit off Nelson.

» May 15, 1974: At Riverfront Stadium, Reds pitcher Roger Nelson has his no-hitter broken up by Bobby Bonds, who clubs a 2-run homer in the 8th. Chris Speier homers in the 9th for the other Giants hit and Nelson finishes with a 4–3 win.
