When Dave Nelson stole a career-high 51 bases in 1972, he always had the green light
from manager Ted Williams, who rarely allowed any player such free rein. Nelson's
best season, in 1973, was the only time he was an everyday player; he had career
highs in batting average (.286) and home runs (7) and made the All-Star team. It
was his second and last season above .240. He later became a baserunning coach for
several teams.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
»July 30, 1968: In the first inning, Washington SS Ron Hansen turns the 8th unassisted triple play in ML history and the first in 41 years. Cleveland's Joe Azcue hits a liner to Hansen, who steps on 2B to double Dave Nelson, and tags Russ Snyder sliding into 2B for the 3rd out. Hansen's effort is not enough, as Washington loses 10–1.
»August 8, 1973:
Against Texas, Yankee starter Fritz Peterson injures himself fielding a bunt single by leadoff hitter Dave Nelson and he is replaced by Fred Beene. Beene pitches nine innings, allowing four hits and winning, 3–2 on Gene Michael's 2-out single in the 9th off starter Jim Merritt.
»August 30, 1974: The Rangers Dave Nelson steals 2B, 3B, and home in the first inning, only the 3rd such performance in the major leagues since 1928, but it's not enough as Texas loses to Cleveland 7–3.
»June 12, 1984: White Sox 1B Coach Dave Nelson declares his love. At the end of the bottom of the 5th in a 6–1 loss to the Angels, Nelson trots out to the coaching box as Diamond Vision flashes the message "Will you marry me?" Nelson then walks over his fiancee Kathy Gutknecht, sitting in the first base box, and presents her with a ring.
