A rabbit's foot, a horseshoe and Greg Myers: all brought good luck wherever they went. A good fielder and a stern guardian of the basebaths, Myers went to the post-season with four of the six clubs he played with. His solid if unspectacular play made him perfect for a reserve role, since the lefty's inconsistent and none-to-powerful bat kept him out of the everyday lineup. At his best he hit .286 for the Minnesota Twins in 1997, but at his worst he dropped to .224 for the Oakland Athletics in 2001. Myers endured an injury-filled career, making ten trips to the disabled list during his major-league service. (EPW)

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
» July 30, 1992: The Blue Jays trade C Greg Myers and OF Rob Ducey to the Angels in exchange for P Mark Eichhorn.

» June 11, 1993: Seattle P Erik Hanson allows four runs on a single in the 4th inning of the Mariners' 8-2 loss to California. With the bases loaded, Greg Myers strokes a single to left. Left fielder Henry Cotto boots the ball, then throws over the head of C Bill Haselman as two runs score. Hanson, who is backing up home, fires a throw over 3B Edgar Martinez's head allowing two more runners to score.

» April 2, 1996: Cecil Fielder pulls a belated April fool's joke on the Twins when, in the 9th inning, he takes off for 2nd base with a 3-2 count on Melvin Nieves and beats the throw from catcher Greg Myers. Fielder's swipe is his first in 1,096 games in the majors. Tiger rookie RHP Clint Sodowsky allows seven hits in five innings in his debut, and the Tigers win 10–6.

» April 24, 1996: Twins' manager Tom Kelly apologizes to the fans after his team wallops the host Tigers 24–11, the highest score rung up on Detroit since their loss in 1912 when the team boycotted over the suspension of Ty Cobb and a sub team was hastily cobbled together. Greg Myers and Paul Molitor each drives in five runs as Minnesota scores against all seven Tiger pitchers they face. The 35 runs is the most today as major league teams total 195 runs, the most this century. The average game total of 13.9 runs tops the record of 13.6 set on July 12, 1931.

» June 17, 1997: At the Metrodome, the Twins LaTroy Hawkins, making his first major league appearance in more than a year, allows three hits in seven innings as the Twins belt the Pirates, 13–1. All nine batters drive in a run with Greg Myers, Scott Stahoviak, Chuck Knoblauch and Denny Hocking each knocking in two.

» December 17, 1999: The Orioles sign free agent C Greg Myers to a 2-year contract.
