A highly regarded high school star, Murphy signed for a $125,000 bonus and began
his career as an 18-year-old outfielder with the Cubs, but saw little action. Converted
to pitching to save his career, he made it back to the majors in 1969 with the crosstown
White Sox and had some success as a reliever, garnering nine saves in two seasons.
