FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
|
| » May 24, 1929: Chicago's Ted Lyons and Detroit's George Uhle go 21 innings before the Tigers get a run to win 6–5 in the longest game—3 hours and 31 minutes—ever seen to date at Comiskey Park. Uhle is the winner, tossing 20 innings, with Vic Sorrell pitching the bottom of the 21st. Lyons, the loser, goes the distance and gives up 24 hits. Charlie Gehringer drives in Roy Johnson with a sac fly for the final run. No pitcher has matched either Lyons' or Uhle's marathon effort since. Les Mueller, in 1945, will come the closest. » August 22, 1940: Les Mueller, pitching for Beaumont (Texas League) pitches a no-hitter over Dallas. » April 17, 1945:
Pete Gray, the one-armed OF, plays his ML debut game with the St. Louis Browns. He singles once, off Les Mueller, in four at bats, and handles no chances in the outfield. St. Louis beats the Tigers 7–1, for their 9th straight Opening Day win, a major-league record that the 1975-83 Mets will tie. » July 21, 1945:
The Detroit Tigers and the Philadelphia Athletics battle to a 1-1 tie in 24 innings. Les Mueller hurls 1923 innings for the Tigers. No hurler has matched this endurance feat. |
