Morgan made the jump from Class A to the Yankees as a 21-year-old in 1951. Used as
a spot starter and middle reliever, he went 9-3 to help win a pennant. He pitched
mostly in relief for three more Yankee pennant-winners before being traded to Kansas
City in 1957. Known as Plowboy because of his stooped walk, exhibited in his frequent
trips from the bullpen to the mound, Morgan went 8-2 as a reliever for the expansion
1961 Angels and retired in 1963 with 64 lifetime saves. He scouted, managed in the
minors, and was an Angels pitching coach.

FROM THE BASEBALL CHRONOLOGY
|
| » April 17, 1951: Rain cancels yesterday's presidential opener in Washington, washing out the debut of rookie Tom Morgan. Morgan would have been the first Yankee rookie ever to start an opener. Clad in an army uniform, Whitey Ford tosses out the first pitch today at Yankee Stadium, and Vic Raschi scatters six singles to shut out the Red Sox, 5–0. Bill Wight gives up all the Yankee runs, including a two-run homer to Jackie Jensen in the 3rd inning. Mickey Mantle, making his debut before 44,860, has one hit and scores a run. Also debuting is public address announcer Bob Sheppard. » June 30, 1954:
Tom Morgan of the Yankees hits three Red Sox in the third inning of a 6-1 loss. Mickey Mantle's HR against Willard Nixon is the only Yankee tally.
» February 19, 1957: The Kansas City Athletics ship pitchers Art Ditmar, Bobby Shantz, and Jack McMahan, and infielders Clete Boyer, Curt Roberts and Wayne Belardi to the Yankees. In return they receive pitchers Maury McDermott, Tom Morgan, Gary Coleman, and Jack Urban, OF Irv Noren, plus infielders Billy Hunter and Milt Graff. Roberts didn't go to NYC till May 4, while Boyer went a month later. Hunter and Urban don't switch until April 5. The veteran Shantz and Boyer will be valuable pickups for New York, with Shantz leading the American League in ERA this year, and Boyer a tough defensive 3B for eight years in pinstripes. The A's will eventually admit that when they signed Boyer for a $40,000 bonus in 1955, it was on behalf of the Yankees, with the understanding that they'd later ship him to NY.
» November 20, 1957:
The KC Athletics trade infielder Billy Martin, outfielders Gus Zernial and Lou Skizas, pitchers Maury McDermott and Tom Morgan, and C Charlie Thompson to Detroit. In exchange, the Tigers send outfielders Bill Tuttle, Jim Small, pitchers Duane Maas and John Tsitouris, C Frank House, SS Kent Hadley, and a player to come later.
