Mitterwald backed up Johnny Roseboro on the Twins' 1969 division-winning team and
became the primary catcher in 1970 when they repeated. He hit .222 with 15 HR and
46 RBI in 1970 and hit .500 in Minnesota's losing effort in the LCS. He played the
most in 1973, catching 122 games and reaching career highs of 16 HR, 64 RBI, 50 runs,
and .259. He was traded to the Cubs for Randy Hundley after the season and spent
four years backing up Steve Swisher. Mitterwald hit three homers in an April 17,
1974 game against the Pirates. After Swisher was traded, Mitterwald was the Cubs'
number-one catcher in 1978, his last season.

After the White Sox score three in the top half of the 11th, the Twins score four in their half to win, 7–6. George Mitterwald drives in the winning run with his 4th hit. » June 27, 1973: David Clyde, 18 and fresh out of Houston's Westchester High School, makes his eagerly awaited debut with the Rangers, before 35,698, the largest Rangers' crowd of the year. Clyde, the number one pick in the draft, walks the first two Twins he faces, then gets Bob Darwin, George Mitterwald, and Joe Lis on swinging 3rd strikes. Clyde goes five innings and gives up only one hit -- a 2-run home run -- walks seven and strikes out 8. He is the winner 4–3. » July 15, 1973:
The Twins connect for three consecutive home runs in the 8th against Cleveland, and all are needed in the 7–6 win. George Mitterwald, Joe Lis, and Jim Holt homer, all off Gaylord Perry.
