Miles was a lefthanded line-drive hitter whose inadequate fielding kept him from winning a regular job. He began as a pitcher in the Cardinals chain, was a .293 batter for the A's from 1939 to 1942, and led the AL with 15 pinch hits in 45 attempts in 1941. (JK)
