» June 7, 1986: University of Arkansas's Jeff King, The Sporting News college player of the year, is the first choice in the June draft. The Pirates take the third baseman. U. of Texas P Greg Swindell is the next pick by Cleveland. Neither will sign for six weeks but Swindell will be in the major leagues after going 2–1 in the minors. The Giants take UNLV's Matt Williams with the 3rd pick; Texas, picking 4th, selects Kevin Brown, followed by high schooler Kent Mercker (Braves), Gary Sheffield (Brewers) and Brad Brink (Phillies). After being skipped over because scouts are convinced the Heisman Trophy winner is headed to the NFL, Bo Jackson is taken in the 4th round by the Royals. College Pitcher of the Year Mike Loynd is taken by Texas in the 7th Round. A total of 331 high schoolers are drafted, the most since 1979, due mainly to the dissolution of the January draft.

» September 11, 1991: Atlanta's Kent Mercker, Mark Wohlers and Alejandro Pena combine to toss a 1-0 no-hitter against San Diego. It is only the second no-hitter in Atlanta history, following Phil Niekro's 1973 masterpiece over the same Padres.

» April 8, 1994: Braves P Kent Mercker no-hits the Dodgers, 6-0, fanning 10 in the process. It his first complete game in the majors. Chan Ho Park comes on to pitch in the 9th for the Dodgers, becoming the first Korean player to appear in a major league game.

» December 17, 1995: The Orioles acquire P Kent Mercker from the Braves in exchange for pitchers Joe Borowski and Rachaad Stewart.

» July 21, 1996: The Orioles trade P Kent Mercker to the Indians in exchange for DH Eddie Murray. Murray returns to the Flock needing just eight homers to reach 500.

» December 10, 1996: The Reds sign free agent P Kent Mercker.

» August 24, 1999: The Red Sox acquire P Kent Mercker from the Cardinals in exchange for C David Benham and P Mike Matthews.

» May 12, 2000: Angels P Kent Mercker is hospitalized following a cerebral hemorrhage. He had left Anaheim's game Thursday night complaining of headaches and dizziness. Doctors say the bleeding has stopped and that Mercker is completely coherent.
