They called him "The Witch Doctor", since only magic could give those sinkers and sliders so much late movement. The slender Panamanian with the quick delivery and aggressive approach made himself invaluable to the New York Yankees during their championship runs with his ability to induce ground balls in any situation and the versatility to pitch as a starter in long or short relief.

Mendoza was a hot commodity almost as soon as he entered the league. Every time the Yankees needed a player to support their playoff run, Mendoza went on the block. Rarely were fewer then seven teams interested in a guy who could be their number-three starter. When the Yankees attempted to trade for Sammy Sosa in 1998, the Cubs demanded Mendoza, and in the 1999 negotiations to acquire Rondell White from Montreal, the Yankees' refusal to include Mendoza proved a fatal stumbling block. » July 6, 1997: Roger Clemens becomes the American League's first 13-game winner, pitching a four-hitter as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees, 2–0. Clemens has 10 strikeouts and one walk in his first shutout of the year. Ramiro Mendoza takes the loss.

» July 24, 2001: The Yankees edge the Tigers, 6–5, despite an 8th inning moon shot by Detroit's Juan Encarnacion, off Ramiro Mendoza, that lands in the 2nd row of the empty blue bleacher seats in left CF. It is believed to be the first ball hit into that area since Yankee Stadium was remodeled in 1976.

» August 14, 2002: Two contests in the American League go 14 innings. Geronimo Gil hits a 2-out 14th inning homer to give Baltimore a 6–5 victory over Minnesota, while the Yankees overcome a straight steal of home by Mike Sweeney to beat the Royals, 3–2. Bernie Williams hits an RBI single to give Ramiro Mendoza (8-3) the win.

» December 29, 2002: The Red Sox sign free agent P Ramiro Mendoza to a 2-year contract.
