Melendez was called up along with Jose Cruz in 1970 to form an outfield with Lou Brock that Cardinals fans expected to last for years. Luis was unable to duplicate his strong minor league marks and spent his career platooning and pinch hitting. A pinch grand slam in 1972 was perhaps the high point of his eight ML years. (FJO)
